During the First World War, the German occupier placed an electrical barrier with a voltage of 2000 volts along the entire Belgian-Dutch border. This stopped spies, Belgian war volunteers, German deserters and smugglers. About 1,000 people died at that 'Death Wire'.
In 2018, students and residents planted white crocuses along the border. Every spring, the crocuses make the former route of the Wire of Death visible again.
