The prince-bishop's hunting lodge is a real gem, hidden deep inside in the Wolbecker Tiergarten. This has existed for many hundreds of years and is one of the oldest forest areas in the Münsterland. It was once used by the Prince-Bishops of Münster as a hunting ground.
The forest got its current shape around 1740 from Prince-Bishop Clemens August I of Bavaria, who is said to have been a passionate hunter. After secularization, the zoo also fell into Prussian possession in 1803. A part of the forest, in which among other things kingfisher, bat and fire salamander are at home, is today designated as a scientific “natural forest cell” and is left to its own devices.
