The floodplain landscape, with 15 information stations along a 6.5km nature trail, didn't always look as lively, colorful, and diverse as it does today. Until the mid-1980s, the area was used for agriculture. Today, the park's maintenance focuses on nature conservation rather than commercial use: the meadows are not fertilized, only used sparingly, and the numerous small bodies of water are carefully tended. Tree pruning is also extensive. Thus, valuable plant and animal species are under special protection in the Emsaue Nature Reserve.

The third section of the Ems River Park is located north of the Ems River. Several larger ponds and pools are surrounded by large pastures. In addition to its diverse natural landscape, the Ems River Park also offers two interesting archaeological sites: the "Napoleon Hill" is the remains of an unfinished bridge over the Ems River from the early 19th century. The "Motte" is a fragment of the ground of a medieval fortification. Also worth seeing are the old Telgte Way of the Cross, which runs north of the park, and a burial mound reconstructed in 2004, which indicates Bronze Age settlement along the Ems River.
