The system was part of the water supply to the light shaft I and was used there to operate the water balance, a hoist for extracting hard coal. The water was led from the smelting tunnel past the glassworks further up, to the surface, so that the horses of the carts could be watered here. The watercourse continued through the garden of the opposite mountain inspection to the collection ponds north of today's cemetery path. The engraved year 1870 suggests that the fountain was renewed at that time.
