The chapel in the Dickelschwaig was built in 1694 by the monks of the Ettal monastery. The six-sided central building has a mighty baroque onion dome. Above the portal you can see the coat of arms and the inscription of the then Ettal abbot Romaldus Haimblinger (RHAZE).
The church was painted in 1755 by Jakob Zeiller, the artist who also created the magnificent dome fresco of the Ettal monastery church. In the past, the Gertrudis Chapel was often the destination of supplications by the citizens of Ettal.
Today, every year on the patron saint's day of St. Hubertus, a mass is read for the employees of the forestry office.
    In depth
The chapel was dedicated to Gertrud von Helfta (memorial day November 17th), who was very popular at the time of its construction. Gertrud, also known as the Great, lived in the second half of the 13th century and is an important representative of women's mysticism. She was a woman of exceptionally high education. She had visions of encounters with Jesus and mystical experiences, which led to a strong love for Jesus developing in her. Despite her spirituality, she did not live a secluded life.
Her love for people was as great as her love for Jesus, and so she was a sought-after advisor and pastor. She translated parts of the Holy Scriptures and left behind descriptions of her visions, her spiritual exercises and her religious knowledge for posterity.
The symbol of her great love for Jesus is the burning heart.
