A famous Alpine climb, the Gavia pass was climbed for the first time since the Giro d'Italia in 1960. The first to reach the summit was Imerio Massignan, who during that stage, the twentieth, from Trento to Bormio, attacked the pink jersey Jacques Anquetil. Massignan, however, was very unlucky and on the descent towards Bormio he punctured four times, however earning the nickname "angel of Gavia", as described in the splendid novel "Imerio" by Marco Ballestracci. The Gavia was last ridden by the Corsa Rosa in 2014. As well as being one of the historic climbs of the Giro and of road cycling, the Gavia is the perfect starting point for some of the best off-road trails you'll ever come across. Do.

Passo Gavia is a popular destination for many cycling and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
It was the scene of many battles in the Giro d'Italia and is one of the most important Alpine passes in Europe, the second highest in Italy after the Stelvio.
It connects Valtellina with Ponte di Legno.

The Gavia Pass is, after the Stelvio, the highest Alpine pass in Italy (2,652 m asl) and connects the Valtellina with Ponte di Legno, in the province of Brescia.

From S. Caterina Valfurva the climb that leads to Passo Gavia gains about 900 meters in altitude in just over 13 kilometers, with an average gradient of 6.5% and with several easy and pedalable sections interspersed with other decidedly challenging ones. The Brescia side from Ponte di Legno, on the other hand, is the most difficult: along the 18 km of road, in fact, a gradient of 12% can be reached with a total difference in height of about 1,380 meters.

Several times "Cima Coppi" of the Giro d'Italia, the Gavia Pass entered by right in the history of cycling with the famous stage of 5 June 1988 when, under a heavy snowfall and temperatures below zero, the Dutch Johan Van der Velde , who was fleeing towards the arrival in Bormio, faced Gavia dressed only in a cotton shirt, risking frostbite.
