Ban pole on the border of Westwoud
    Exile as a severe punishment

Three beautiful and historically interesting ban posts have been preserved in West Friesland. One of these, a bollard from 1754, is located on the Streekweg, on the border between Westwoud and Hoogkarspel. It is also the former border between the city of Grootebroek and the city of Westwoud.

On the heavy brick base is a sandstone pole, crowned by a lion, holding a shield with the coat of arms of Westwoud, consisting of a barren tree with three birds in the branches. They refer to the three original villages of the urban West Forest: Westwoud, Ooster- and Westerblokker. Those villages have the same village coat of arms.

    Ejected

In addition to the death penalty, exile was one of the most severe punishments in medieval criminal law. For a city citizen (citizen), exile meant that for a certain period of time, or even forever, he was expelled from his own gate community.

This boundary marker stands on the original boundary between Westwoud and Grootebroek. Westwoud was elevated to 'Steede van Westwoude' in 1413. In addition to capital punishment, banishment was one of the most severe punishments in the Middle Ages. You were banned, were you never allowed to enter the borders again and you were outlawed.
