In Hainhofen, a district of the town of Neusäß in the Augsburg district, there is a historic sunken lane that originally served as a side road of the Roman road Augsburg-Günzburg. This path begins to the left of the church of St. Stephanus and leads under candle arches into the forest. A former brewery owner built a grotto dedicated to the Virgin Mary along the path. The sunken lane leads to the “Swabian Heaven”, a forest area west of Hainhofen that is known for its scenic beauty. There used to be a summer cellar for lager beer and a restaurant there that was very popular with Augsburg residents in the 19th century. Today, the former pub is used as a wine cellar.
