Volterra is one of the most beautiful Tuscan towns of Etruscan and medieval origins, rich in historic buildings and also known for the processing of alabaster. Perched on a 500 meter high hill, it offers spectacular views of the Val d'Era. It can be reached via the SR 68, which is characterized in the last section by tight curves and a slope of about four to five percent.

The road from Saline up to Volterra is actually not too challenging with a racing bike. Actually. The southwest orientation ensures that the slope is exposed to the sun. There are never shadows. Therefore, the route can become very demanding and uncomfortable from noon on this background. The evening or even better the morning hours are particularly recommended here in summer.
The landscape is a pretty driveway. Especially since you can usually see Volterra as it stands majestically on top of the hill.

Volterra is an interesting Tuscan town of Etruscan origin and of medieval layout; it is rich in historical buildings and also known for the alabaster processing. Perched on a hill of over 500 meters, it offers spectacular views towards the Val d'Era and the cecinese plain. You can reach it from Saline on a road, the SR 68, characterized in the final stretch by narrow bends and a rising slope (the average is 4-5%), but open on wide valleys dominated by arid "Balze" or fields of wheat and Mediterranean vegetation.
