The name "Mertinger Höll" still reminds of the hard work of the farmers in the swampy plain. Plagued by heat, wet ground and countless snakes, they mined peat or mowed the litter meadows until the 1960s. Today, the core area in Mertinger Ried is a protected area - but it was a long way to get there.

Formerly a peat mining area, today a bird sanctuary of European importance and promoted and supported by it. Beautiful in every season, especially of course during bird migration. The botanist will find rare plants here, the historian will find legacies from the time when a bomb dropping area was planned here (by the hut).
