At Leer, near the Ems, is the twelve meter high Plytenberg. Some believe that it was a pagan sacrificial site, others see it as an old tomb. However, people say that it dates from the time when giants still existed.

Two giant girls once enjoyed themselves on the islands of Baltrum and Juist. They enjoyed the glittering dune sand and packed as much of it as they could hold in their aprons. Then they ran across the mudflats to Emden and walked along the Ems, each on a bank so that the river was between them. The heavy sand, however, tore up her aprons and seeped through the holes, and so each sprinkled an entire strip along the Ems. This is how the dikes became.

When they saw Leer lying there, the water turned right to pick up the Leda. Then one giant jumped over to the other in one leap. Knacks - tore off her apron string and all the sand fell in a heap. And so the Plytenberg came into being.
