Schwedenschanze (Stade)

The Schwedenschanze is the name given to the remains of an early medieval hillfort in what is now the Groß Thun district in the south of the Hanseatic city of Stade.

From the bridge, there is a magnificent view of the Schwedenschanze and the surrounding countryside.

In 2016, during the construction of two houses in Groß Thun, fragments of pottery and traces of two pile dwellings were discovered approximately 80 cm below the surface. Archaeologists dated the finds to around 600 AD and consider them remnants of the settlement belonging to the Schwedenschanze (Swedish entrenchment).

In the spring of 2021, geophysical surveys near the Schwinge River revealed a third, significantly smaller fortification and an outer ditch between the Schwinge valley and the Geest ridge near Groß Thun. At the beginning of 2022, another, as yet undated, plank road was discovered.
