As victims of the Berlin Wall (also Mauerausfer or Mauertote) persons are called, between 13 August 1961 and 9 November 1989 during the escape from the GDR at the Berlin Wall as a result of the application of the shooting order by soldiers of the GDR border troops or killed by accidents.

The number of deaths varies. According to findings of the government-funded research project of the Center for Contemporary History (ZZF) and the Berlin Wall Foundation, there were at least 139 victims of the Berlin Wall, including 101 GDR refugees, 30 East and West residents who were injured or shot dead, and 8 on duty killed border guards. The ZZF does not count the people who died during or after the border controls of a natural death - mainly due to a heart attack. At least 251 such cases are known. The working group August 13, operator of the Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie, was in 2009 of 245 victims of the earth and 38 natural deaths.

The Ministry of State Security (MfS) determined the circumstances of the incidents and controlled, if possible, the handling of the dead and injured. Compared to the relatives and the public, the MfS tried to cover up the facts of the incident. Documents were falsified, false reports were given to the press and traces were blurred. After the fall of the revolution, the incidents partly led to a legal appraisal in the Politburo and Mauerschützen processes against executing border guards and their military and political superiors. There were 131 cases against 277 people, about half of which ended in convictions
