As the highest village in the Schwarzenberg dominion, Breitenbrunn was probably only founded in the 13th century. Based on the size of the corridor and the complex, it can be determined that initially no more than ten families settled. The village "breitinprun" was first mentioned in 1380 in a cartulary of the burgraves of Leisnig, when the prospecting rights for a tin mine were renewed.
