Originally the fort was located on a reef, isolating itself from the tide, but the city's continued development has resulted in it being located on the mainland and is currently more than 150 meters from the sea.It was built on a wooden fortress built by Captain Juan Rejón when the conquest of the Canary Islands began in 1478. Different phases were incorporated depending on the defense needs. Firstly, the medieval-style square tower known as Torre de Alonso Fajardo. A surrounding defensive bastion was then built around 1515 and expanded a few years later. In 1553 it received some additions and was rebuilt after the fire of 1599 caused by the Dutch army led by Pieter van der Does. Finally, in the last third of the 17th century, the external structure that can be seen today was built.
