Castle Wittenburg, which was built in the Middle Ages, was situated on the southern tip of the Finie, a ridge northwest of Elze, between the Osterwald (Barenburg) and Marienburg. Strategically, it was cheap; Thus, the north-south road connection as well as the west-eastern Hellweg could be controlled.

The castle changed in the 14th century to a monastery of the Augustinian canons within the Hildesheim Congregation. After the Reformation in the mid-16th century, the monastery collapsed and became the seat of the office Wittenberg. Later it changed to the domain, and under King George III. from Hanover to Mustergut. Since 1795 it was meeting place of the Calenbergischen agriculture society. In terms of construction, essentially only the former monastery church has been preserved. Today it is used in the front half as a church, in the back half as part of the Wittenburger summer for exhibitions and events.
