Around 10.5 million years ago, the Urrhein flowed from Worms to Bingen across today's Rheinhessen. Bones and teeth were found early on when the sand was mined. The finds in the dinothermal sands made Eppelsheim famous in the scientific world. Many fossil mammal species 🦕🦖 were found and described here for the first time. In 1820 the famous femur of a great ape was found, known as the "Eppelsheimer Femur". It was the first fossil ape ever found anywhere in the world.
