A small wooden bench and wooden table in the shade can be found right by the sea to take a break. There are clean public toilets at the brickworks... 😉 Since the hiking trail there offers fewer options... 😕

On the Broagerland peninsula, more precisely on the Iller Strand, the "Gendarmstien (Gendarm Path)" runs for a while together with the "Teglværksstien (Brickworks Path)". Here you will find information boards that point out the traces (ovens, kneading mills, dilapidated loading areas, overgrown clay pits) of the disappeared brickworks.

There were once eight brickworks on the Iller Strand. This brickworks, the Catherinesminde ring kiln brickworks, was in operation for 236 years, until 1968, and is the only one to have survived here. It is one of the most important Danish industrial monuments and gives an interesting insight into the history of brickworks. There were a total of 70 brickworks on the Danish shore of the Flensburg Fjord. Large quantities of red and yellow bricks were produced here until 1968.

The drying barns of Catherinesminde look impressive in their length, even when viewed from Gendarmstien. Unfortunately, I had not planned a visit and due to time constraints, it was no longer possible spontaneously. I regret that, but perhaps I will get the opportunity to make up for a visit with more detailed observations.

This stage of the Gendarmenstieg is called the brick stage. You will understand why when you discover the brick factory and the beach section.
