Set upon a hill next to the cathedral, Durham Castle is a beautiful example of a Norman Castle. Built under the orders of William the Conqueror in 1072, the castle has seen its fair share of drama from attacks by rebel Northumbrians to executions.
The castle has been used by the University of Durham since 1837. Although 100 students now live here, you can still visit on a guided tour. Together with Durham Cathedral, the castle is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
