The western slope of the Haale is characterized by strikingly large boulders, which are apparently randomly distributed in the forest.

The Haale consists mainly of Rotliegend that forms a plateau and on which there is also a layer of quartz sands that is also over 20 million years old. For around 500,000 years, individual blocks have been sliding slowly down the slope, alternating between cold and warm times.

Thanks to their structure, these blocks of quartz sand are extremely resistant to weathering and erosion.

The starting stone is a light quartz sand from the teritar, which was solidified into very hard sandstone by small-silica binders.

The origin of the silica is unknown. It could come from basalt weathering or from groundwater rich in humic acid, which is why such sandstones were also referred to as lignite quartz.

One of these blocks is the "Dicke Berta", under which a young Neolithic jadeite depot was allegedly discovered in 1930.
