"Old postal route" ... on historical traces through the district

The "Alte Postweg" is based on its importance for postal traffic in the 18th century when the electors of Hanover were also kings of England in personal union and relocated their residence to London. Their official mail was brought to Cuxhaven by riders and mail coaches and shipped from there to England. The old postal route was the central axis of the empire at that time.

Fish ponds in front of the Scharnstedter Geest (sign 04 of the old postal route):
A few decades ago, the local landscape was animated by a large number of wetlands, ponds and small bodies of water that were scattered like a mosaic. Today, such structures are among the most endangered landscape elements in Germany. Many animal and plant species disappeared with the waters and wetlands. There are 120 ponds of various sizes on the Holzapfel & Söhne site. The pond complex was founded in 1880 by Georg Elbrecht, the station restorer.
