Beautiful half-timbered buildings form the core of the old town. In 1270 Uelzen received city rights.

The Hanseatic city of Uelzen is a central city in northeastern Lower Saxony. It belongs to the metropolitan region of Hamburg and is the county seat of the district of Uelzen. Uelzen is a member of the Saxon Hanseatic League and an independent municipality.
Uelzen is characterized by half-timbered architecture and also has some remarkable buildings of North German brick Gothic. Far beyond the regional borders, the district town became known when Friedensreich Hundertwasser was won over to redesign the station. The last work of the Viennese artist and architect was inaugurated as part of the World Expo Expo 2000 as Hundertwasserbahnhof Uelzen and has since been a popular tourist destination.
