From here there is a magnificent view. On the east side on the Königssee, Obersee and the Eiskapelle and on the west side on the Hochkalter and the Wimbachtal.

At 2713 m, the middle peak of the Watzmann is the highest peak of the Watzmann and the 4th highest mountain in Germany. The view from here extends from the Berchtesgaden Alps such as Hochkalter in the west and Hoher Göll and Hochkönig in the east to the Steinernes Meer with Schönfeldspitze and Großer Hundstod in the south. Salzburg and Berchtesgaden can also be seen to the north, as well as parts of the Königssee in the valley. The ascent here is long and you have to cover many meters of altitude, from the Hocheck there is also some climbing. A head for heights and sure-footedness are absolutely necessary, previous alpine experience or the company of an experienced person is recommended, good physical condition is also helpful. In good weather it can be quite a walk, so an early start is advisable.

One of the most spectacular and beautiful ascents in the Eastern Alps and a true alpine classic. To be recommended, however, only for high-conditioning (walking time over 10 hours) and alpine-driven enthusiasts. Prerequisites: absolute freedom from giddiness and surefootedness, safe AND speedy climbing in the third alpine difficulty level (UIAA III +), the key positions only come towards the end of the wall, absolutely reliable orientation (the east wall is NOT marked and NOT a via ferrata!), Many accidents occur due to orientation errors, as alternative routes through the wall become significantly more difficult than the Berchtesgadener Weg (over 100 dead!), Reliable handling of high alpine weather conditions (since the weather is mostly from west / southwest, you see bad weather fronts in the east wall does not come, the ridge on the crossing is at risk of fire, fire hazard, there are no alternatives). Classic rope securing is not useful due to the wall height, you risk a bivouac at low speed. In the wall danger from water / moisture, icing, brittle rock and rockfall. Even with mountain guides very high demands on fitness and speed. Alterative for less experienced: Watzmann crossing, starting from the Watzmannhaus with descent via Wimbachgries. Also a great tour ...
