The gravel ponds are part of the NSG Okertal Südlich Vienenburg. After the extraction of raw materials was completed, the ponds were renatured and have now been transformed into a reserve for waders and water birds with flat water zones without vegetation, reeds, large sedge groves and marsh-like islands in deep water areas. The ponds serve as a secondary habitat for numerous bird, fish, amphibian and insect species.
