The "Inclined Plane" is located in the district of Kulmbach, it begins east of the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg train station and ends in Marktschorgast.
The steep section was built between 1844 and 1848 as part of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn and opened on November 1st, 1848. Because of the numerous retaining walls, incisions and stone dams, it is considered a technical masterpiece of its time. The construction costs amounted to 917 318 guilders. An initially planned steep section with a steeper incline and the use of stationary steam engines was changed in favor of a more elongated, flatter route. On the way to the Rhine-Danube watershed south of the Münchberg plateau, the ramp overcomes 6.8 kilometers of 157.7 meters of altitude with a gradient of up to 25 ‰.

Between the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg and Marktschorgast stations there is still a railway line that made European railway history at the time of its construction in the years 1844 to 1848 - this is the first route in Europe that has a significant difference in height of 158 meters had to overcome an incline of 1:40 and could be driven on without additional technical aids!

Wonderful corner for railway fans. Unfortunately due to the A9 a lot of traffic noise
