In the Middle Ages, the garden and cloister of the Benedictine abbey, later the Saint-Martial church, were located here. After the French Revolution, the garden was closed and opened at the beginning of the 19th century. at the initiative of the botanist, bibliophile and municipal councilor Esprit Requien, it expanded into a botanical garden. After his death, the Place du Cours Jean Jaurès was developed in the mid-19th century and the garden was reduced by half. A public green space has been created.
In 1990/91 three landscape architects recreated the garden with Mediterranean plants. The ruins of the Gothic monastery are accentuated by water systems and flower beds, while tall trees provide cool shade when visitors sit on the benches . At Square Agricol Perdiguier, also called “Le Petit Jardin”, there is also a play area for toddlers. Agricol Perdiguier was a local carpenter and politician, and his statue is in the garden. A bar open in high and low season offers light meals, drinks and ice creams to enjoy in the sun.
