Very nice piece for cycling or walking, part of Natuurmonumenten Dintelse Gorzen.
Benedensas is a restored lock complex, dating from 1824. The complex, near Steenbergen, was built to protect the land behind it from high water and for shipping to bridge the difference in height by ebb and flow.
In addition to the locks, you will also find a hamlet of the same name, with some historic buildings. The locks and the hamlet appear in the stories about Merijntje Gijzen by author A.M. De Jong. The neighborhood is described as a rough place where the skippers wait at a café for their boat in the lock. Lower axis is therefore part of the Merijntje Gijzen route.
Since the completion of the Philipsdam, the lock complex no longer has a function. The complex is still worth a visit, thanks to its unique location and nice atmosphere. In addition to the lock complex you will also find a restaurant / tea garden.
