The new construction of the north-west runway was an essential part of the Frankfurt Airport expansion program. When the planning approval decision was submitted in December 2007, building rights were created for this major infrastructure project, which is a prerequisite for the necessary increase in capacity at the airport. The planning services were completed with the award of the construction work in 2009. Construction took place between 2009 and 2011 and commissioning took place on October 21, 2011.

In addition to the 2,800 m long runway, the project includes six fast taxiways, 2 final taxiways and a taxiway parallel to the runway. This taxiway leads the landed aircraft to so-called taxiway bridges at the western and eastern ends, which form the connection to the existing airport grounds. These are two bridge structures that span the new DB Cologne-Rhine/Main line, the A3 and the K124 district road. These structures are considered tunnel structures with regard to the traffic routes crossed and were designed in accordance with the relevant regulations.

The north-west runway was equipped with the latest technology. It is fully redundant, instrument-controlled and has been equipped with innovative lighting in all weather conditions, detected safety fences and bird strike protection devices.
