Before Hambühl received its own parish, the St. Matthäus chapel already existed with a chaplain documented for 1414. Around 1464/65, when it was still a separate parish (albeit with the right of the previous mother parish of Unternesselbach to propose the pastor of the parish church of St. Matthew), Hambühl was parish in 1544 after Baudenbach. In 1757 the church, whose oldest bell bears the year 1443, was given a new building. The place has been predominantly Evangelical-Lutheran since the Reformation. The Protestant inhabitants are parish to St. Lambert (Baudenbach), Roman Catholic to Assumption (Ullstadt).
