There were originally two entrances to the city, namely the Ludwigstor (originally German Thor) in the northwest and the Weißenburger Tor (originally French Thor) in the east.

The Ludwigstor is part of the Germersheim Fortress. It was a royal Bavarian fortress from 1861. Today, the city and fortress museum of the city of Germersheim is housed in the historic gate.
