The foundation stone of the Germersheim Fortress, which was opened in 1937, is also located at the gate.The second gate is the Weißenburger Tor. Both gates are nicely lit at night!

There were originally two entrances to the city, namely the Ludwigstor (originally German Thor) in the northwest and the Weißenburger Tor (originally French Thor) in the east.

The Ludwigstor is part of the Germersheim Fortress. It was a royal Bavarian fortress from 1861. Today, the city and fortress museum of the city of Germersheim is housed in the historic gate.
