The officers of the 4th, 7th, and 10th Bavarian Infantry Regiments had the memorial erected in memory of their fallen comrades. It was dedicated on the first anniversary of the battle on July 26, 1867. The last battle of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 took place here on July 26, 1866. The war had already been decided after Austria's defeat at the Battle of Königsgrätz on July 3, 1866. Subsequently, the Prussians waged war against Austria's allies. The Prussian army faced the VII and VIII Corps of the German Confederation. After several skirmishes against the VII Corps, the latter withdrew towards the Odenwald, and the Prussians were able to capture Frankfurt without a fight. The VIII (Bavarian Corps) withdrew to Würzburg, occupying the hills near Rossbrunn. The last battle of the Austro-Prussian War took place at Rossbrunn on July 26, 1866. On 27 July, after a brief bombardment of Würzburg, peace was concluded.
