Echten, an authentic Drenthe village, has a history dating back to at least the year 1181. There are several national monuments within the protected villagescape. This turf hut was built in 1981 by residents of the village for the 800 years of the village's existence. There used to be many more of these types of huts, covered with heather sods, which served as simple shelters for peat workers. A turf hut usually consisted of one room where the entire family lived and slept together. The roof had an opening for the smoke from the open fire, which served both for heating and cooking. Sometimes part of the space was even used as a stable for the goat.
