The Vlierbeek Abbey in the green part of Kessel-Lo is a dream stopover for hikers. By the way, we are not far from the end of our walk: the Flemish art city of Leuven. Benedictine monks lived and worked in this abbey for seven centuries until the French Revolution. The gardens, monumental church and remarkable monastery buildings still exude a special atmosphere. 'Hospitality' was one of the tasks of the abbey, and you can still enjoy it on the cozy terrace of the inn.

The abbey was founded in 1127 by the Benedictines of Affligem. In 1572 the buildings were burned down by the troops of the Prince of Orange. Return to the abbey in 1642 and gradual reconstruction of the damaged areas. Large new buildings were erected in the 18th century. Of these, only the classicist church and the abbot's building remain. During the French rule, the monastery was abandoned. The Benedictines were expelled (1792), around 1801 (Concordat) some returning monks moved into the buildings again. In 1829 Vlierbeek became an independent parish. Some monastic buildings and appurtenances were, subject to alterations, taken over by private persons, others were demolished without a new purpose. The graveyard contains grave monuments of famous people, including professors Alberdingk-Thijm and Emiel Vliebergh.

The priory was founded by the Benedictines of Affligem in 1127; foundation of "stone" monastery buildings from 1158 and completion of the first large church in 1170. During the wars of religion, the monks fled to their refuge in Leuven; the abbey was destroyed in 1572. After the return of the monks in 1642, the damaged parts were gradually rebuilt. During a first campaign from 1642 to around 1730, mainly the main building, building and appurtenances were tackled. The second reconstruction campaign was started in 1776 under the leadership of L. B. Dewez. However, of that grand renovation plan, only the church and the abbot's quarters were implemented. After the suppression of the monasteries in 1796, the Benedictines were expelled in 1797; their goods were sold in 1798. Around 1801 some returning monks moved into the buildings again; However, this did not result in a revival of the abbey. After Vlierbeek became an independent parish in 1829, some parts were demolished and others were acquired by private individuals, with or without modifications.
