The Schollenmühle is located in the Bannriet-Spitzmäder nature reserve and is a former peat factory. Until 1998, peat was cut here and processed into special soils. Today you can get information about this old craft and the surrounding nature reserve in a visitor center with exhibition rooms inside the mill.

PLAICE MILL
The Schollenmühle is a former peat factory. It is located in the middle of the Bannriet nature reserve, between Altstätten and Oberriet. You can literally see from the crooked, crooked buildings that they have stories to tell about the peat and the landscape. Under the sponsorship of the Pro Riet Rheintal association, the former peat factory was converted into an information center for visitors to the nature reserve in the winter of 2009-2010. At the same time, significant ecological improvements were realized on the Schollenmühle site and in its wider surroundings. The Swiss Bird Protection / BirdLife Switzerland and the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach were on hand as project partners.

BANNRIET – SCHOLLENMÜHLE
The former peat factory is located in the Bannriet nature reserve. The Schollenmühle and the information center are worth a visit.
The Schollenmühle is a former peat factory, the oldest building of which dates back to 1918. For eighty years, peat was mined in the Bannriet and processed into peat dust and special soils in the Schollenmühle before it finally ceased operations in 1998.
Under the sponsorship of the Pro Riet Rheintal association, the Schollenmühle, located in the middle of the nature reserve, was converted into an information center for visitors to the area. Today it houses an exhibition that presents the Riet habitat, illuminates its history and provides comprehensive information about peat extraction. An 8 km circular route with information cubes makes it possible to discover the large and small sights of the Riet on your own. With a bit of luck and the necessary amount of patience, you can make exciting observations of nature in the Schollenmühle area. A large pond with a walk-in underwater cube and various small bodies of water make the former factory site a valuable habitat for some rare plants and animals.
The Schollenmühle is located in the middle of a large-scale no-driving zone. Private vehicles must be parked outside on approved parking spaces. The Pro Riet club website provides information on parking options.
