The museum is housed in a geodesic dome designed by Richard Buckminster Fuller at the eastern end of False Creek. The dome was one of the main attractions at the Expo 86 World's Fair and was subsequently remodeled at a cost of C$19.1 million. The museum opened in 1988, and a year later the OMNIMAX cinema was added in the top part of the dome.
