Beinn a’ Chleibh is a Munro forever in the shadow of its more illustrious sibling. Its summit is merely a rise in mighty Ben Lui’s western limb, just high enough to sneak into the Munro tables by 5 feet (1.5 m).

Even if it hadn’t made Munro status, Beinn a’ Chleibh would still see plenty of boots. It is part of an attractive horseshoe route that also bags the higher Ben Lui. Approaches to Beinn a’ Chleibh invariably begin in Glen Lochy. All routes immediately cross the River Lochy (potentially dangerous if in spate), duck under the railway, climb through woodland and then ascend the open, steep ground to the summit.

Its position right on the northwestern border of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park gives it a splendid view out west towards Ben Cruachan and north over a sea of peaks into Lochaber, to the distant dome of Ben Nevis.

Tips

  • Beinn a' Chleibh is a 3,005-foot (916 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It's actually one of the smallest Munros on the list. Its neighbour, the popular Ben Lui, towers over it so it's actually hard to imagine it's a Munro when you come to climb it. I hiked them together, alongside Ben Oss and Beinn Dubhchraig as a circuit of four. A marvellous day of hill-walking close to Tyndrum.

  • One of the smallest Munros, and an easy ascent after tackling Ben Lui. It’s summit is marked by a cairn at 916m.
