During the First World War, two men from Assamstadt are said to have made a promise: They would build a Marian grotto if they survived the war safely and remained unharmed. According to tradition, the two kept their promise by producing tuff stones and carving the figures themselves. The small grotto has become a beautiful place of pilgrimage.
