The synagogue, built in the classicist style by Alexander Beer, the architect of the Jewish community, between 1913 and 1916 in the Orthodox rite, had room for 2000 people. The magnificent building, which mixed medieval and baroque style elements, housed a hall for youth services, the weekday synagogue and service apartments. The main building was badly damaged in the pogrom night of 1938, but the ruins were not finally demolished until 1958/59. The former youth synagogue now serves as a conservative synagogue. The memorial plaque by Cornelia Lengfeld was installed in 1989 and added in 1995.

The Fraenkelufer synagogue was the first in Berlin to be reopened after the Shoah - on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year - in September 1945. Jews who had survived the death camps or were in hiding in Berlin gathered together with American, British and Soviet soldiers for a symbolic new beginning on Fraenkelufer.

From the orthodox synagogue in Kreuzberg (today's Fraenkelufer), built in 1916, after the destruction on the night of the pogrom in 1938, only an outbuilding, the youth synagogue, was preserved. This serves today as a conservative synagogue. A memorial stone designed by Cornelia Lengfeld, which marks the southwestern corner of the former synagogue, was added in 1988, and completed in 1995 by an informational stele on the waterfront promenade along the Landwehr Canal.
