It is the oldest church in Madeira – the Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Funchal Cathedral was planned at the end of the 15th century and was consecrated by the bishop in 1514.

The church was built entirely from 12 different types of volcanic stone. Many of the original ornaments and statues from the founding period are now on display in the nearby Museum of Sacred Art.

What remained of the cathedral were donations from the then King Dom Manuel. The altar and pulpit date from his time, and the baptismal font was also a gift from the king.

You can find the church in the historic center of Funchal, not far from Praça da Autonomia. A statue of John Paul II, who visited Funchal in 1991, greets you in front of the cathedral.

The cathedral of Funchal is "small but beautiful" and in contrast to the Igreja do Colégio kept simple. But worth a visit.

Absolutely worth seeing building in the middle of the old town. With its art-historical interior, the cathedral is in excellent condition.

Funchal Cathedral (Sé Catedral) is one of Madeira's most important buildings and an impressive example of Manueline architecture. Its dark volcanic rock facade and the ornate wooden roof inside give it a unique character. A cultural highlight in the heart of the city that you shouldn't miss on any tour of Funchal.
