It is the landmark of the Hardheim community: the rocket on the "Hohmann-Höhe".The over twelve-meter-high and eight-ton building pays tribute to the engineer Walter Hohmann (1880-1945), who was born in the Erftal community and who laid the foundations for modern space travel as early as 1925 with his pioneering mathematical studies on the "accessibility of the heavenly bodies". His calculations are still used today, making Walter Hohmann one of the great space pioneers. The model of the "Ariane V" has not been in Hardheim that long, more precisely since March 2012. The predecessor, a 15-meter high model of the "Europa" rocket, was set up in the same place from June 1974 to December 2003 until it broke during an attempt at renovation. While trying to dismantle the "Europa" missile, it broke in two.
In March 2012 the "Ariane V" was erected with two cranes and the fire brigade's turntable ladder: Hardheim had its landmark again!
