Hiking

In 1960, the Soviets built their westernmost nuclear missile launch base here. The Americans only discovered the facility in 1978 because it is almost completely underground. The complex is now open to the public as a museum (€10 per person). Successful efforts have been made to make it look as if it were still in operation. In particular, the background noises (the hum of machines, snippets of conversation in Russian) and the lifelike dolls in uniform and gas masks that suddenly appeared were pretty scary!

Hiking

The museum impressively conveys how close our planet came to a nuclear catastrophe during the Cold War. Just looking at the antediluvian control technology makes it hard to believe that such a dangerous technology could have been controlled with it.
