The original connection between the Sopra and Sottoceneri is of national importance and the great emphasis on historical and technical content has led the Inventory of Historical Roads of Switzerland (IVS) to take up the project and restore it. The reopening took place in September 2016.
Historically, this road gained importance with the fall of the Torretta Bridge (Buzza di Biasca, a natural disaster that destroyed part of Ticino) in the mid-15th century, when the port of Magadino became the most important trade center with Milan. Over the centuries, this section has undergone several transformations: from footpath to cantonal main road in the late 19th century.
In total, 1392 meters of the original section were restored, achieving an average width of 4.27 meters and a gradient of 10-17 percent.
In order to preserve the characteristics of this important road, traditional materials and craft methods were used for the reconstruction. Along the way there are also groups of chestnut trees and dense vegetation to admire. Anyone approaching the Vedeggio valley from Gambarogno can enjoy discovering nature.
Warning: The path is extremely steep and not suitable for every bike, you will be shaken quite a bit.
At Monte Ceneri - the Swiss military has now built a construction right into the passage towards this stretch. When on the pass, stay on the mainroad towards Bellinzona and in the first curve to the right - the new entrance on the left sparks off. Recommendable only for Mountain Bikes.
