The Grote Nister rises at the Fuchskaute (657m), the Kleine Nister at the Stegskopf (654m) in the Hoge Westerwald.
At Heimborn, the Kleine Nister then flows to the Grote Nister at the 'Deutsches Eck van het Westerwald'.
The two river valleys widen and an idyllic natural entity is created at the confluence in Heimborn.
