A nice trip back in time. Many excavations can be seen in the museum.

Info as of March 21, 2020:
Parts of the castle complex are being renovated. Driving and parking is not possible. The Burgschänke is closed. The museums and the bastion garden are open at regular times.

The castle complex was built in 1355 by Bishop Berthold Burgrave von Zollern and served as a bishopric until 1725. In the following centuries, the Willibaldsburg was expanded by various bishops. In the 17th century the castle was converted into a representative residence. In 1633 the castle was conquered by the Swedes but recaptured in the same year. The walls and bastions, the armory, the 63 m long gate hall and the "Gemmingen building" with the two towers have been preserved from the 420 m long castle complex. In the north wing of the Gemmingen building is the Jura Museum with the famous fossils of the Solnhofen limestone limestone, in the south wing the Museum of Prehistory and Early History is housed. In 1998 the so-called bastion garden with plants from the Hortus Eystettensis was set up on the blacksmith's bastion.

The bastion garden will be open again from April 2022.

Be sure to follow the posted signs to the entrance to the castle (the main path to the castle is currently closed).
The castle is scaffolded over a large area and parts are closed. According to an employee, it will take at least until the end of 2023, as archaeologists are constantly uncovering new finds and partially reconstructing them.
Nevertheless, also currently very worth seeing and the Jura Museum is great!
