Originally, the salt pond of the saline was used to store wood, for the wooden rods that were used to conduct the energy generated by water and wind to the pumping stations. After Oldesloe became a spa, in 1824 the saline pond, which was fed by natural salt springs, cleaned, enlarged and integrated into the infrastructure of the spa park. Today it is used as a fishing pond.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the spa park was the center of a popular salt, mud, and sulfur bath, founded by the Oldesloe pharmacist Dr. Friedrich August Lorentzen in 1813. A granite saltwater bath still in the park originates from the former bathing pavilion. The spa park was designed by the Bremen gardener Isaak Hermann Albert Altmann. The remains of old chestnut and linden avenues still bear witness to this design.

From 1898 onward, the spa experienced a second heyday with elaborate new buildings and ornamental flowerbeds.

Today, the park lies a natural green oasis in the heart of the city, framed by a loop of the Best. Where once there were graduation towers on the river and bathhouses on the salt pond, romantic tree shapes are reflected in the saline water. Although no longer do spa guests enjoy the brine, a saline spring still feeds a small moor in the park, creating interesting plant communities that provide a home for a rich birdlife.
