The fortified castle of Arques-la-Bataille was built on a remarkable site: a narrow rocky outcrop dominating the perpendicular depression formed by the valleys of Varenne, Béthune and Eaulne which meet to form l'Arques 6 kilometers from the Channel 3. Erected on the spine of this spur, the fortress is separated from the Cauchois plateau by a narrow valley which isolates it from its hinterland and reinforces its defensive potential, the lookouts thus had an extended view that could monitor the valley up to at the sea.
