An Teallach, the Forge, is monstrously huge and spectacular, thought by many to be the greatest of all of Scotland’s mountains. Hikes to Bidean a’Ghlas Thuill take you to its highest summit, a simply sensational place for taking in the mountain’s full, malevolent grandeur, including the fearsome Corrag Bhuidhe Pinnacles. This is one of the finest viewpoints in Britain.

The mountain is an ancient giant of Torridonian sandstone, thrust up above some of the oldest exposed land on the planet. Its location is just as remarkable as its savage architecture. It rises on the edge of the Fisherfield Forest, a region often cited as ‘the Great Wilderness’.

Walking routes to Bidean a’Ghlas Thuill usually start from Dundonnell by Little Loch Broom on the Destitution Road. There’s a hotel here but for more accommodation options, Ullapool is a good bet. The going can be boggy in the lower reaches, but once you get up high, the hiking is positively life affirming.

It’s possible to bag Bidean a’Ghlas Thuill on a there-and-back with no technical difficulty. A full traverse of the mountain includes tackling the Corrag Bhuidhe Pinnacles, which are awesomely exposed and a grade three scramble if tackled head on, though the main difficulties can be avoided on bypass paths. In winter conditions the An Teallach is best left to equipped mountaineers.

Tips

  • If you wonder why An Teallach is frequently cited as the greatest single mountain in Britain, hike up to Bidein a' Ghlas Thuill and you'll soon see why. A lofty summit in a region known as 'the Great Wilderness', the panorama is extensive. Yet it is the view towards Sgurr Fiona and beyond to the Corrag Bhuidhe Pinnacles that will have your hairs standing up on end and your heart soaring.

  • This has to be one of the best Munro summit views of all. Looking back towards Sgurr Fiona Munro Summit and the Fisherfield Munros beyond, the views from Bidein a'Ghlas Thuill are phenomenal. Whether you bravely scrambled the Grade 2-3 pinnacles, or stuck to the relative safety of the bypass path (like me), you still get awesome views from the summit of this great mountain. Is An Teallach the best mountain on mainland Britain? You decide!

  • A fantastic munro summint with views to Sgurr Fiona and Lord Berkleys seat. The scree slopes below are steep but worth all the effort. Those uncomfortable with scrambing could consider this Munro by ascending directly up the path from the Mountain Rescue hut at Dundonnell.
