On the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn and at the stations of Neufra and Gammertingen, the entire German railway history of the last 120 years has played out on a small scale: the brilliantly cleaned small railway locomotives in the imperial era, the economic changes caused by the railways in the region, the coal and material shortages in the First World War II, the early start of "dieselization" from 1934, the blowing up of the four railway bridges in Gammertingen on April 24, 1945 and their reconstruction, the last heyday of steam train passenger transport in the 1950s until it was ousted from the 1960s by the Rescuers of the branch lines, the railbuses. At the same time, diesel locomotives also replaced steam locomotives for freight transport, general cargo was discontinued, and block trains with salt or cement precursors were increasingly being driven.
From 1971 to 1974, however, the museum railway operation with the former state railway steam locomotive 11 was scheduled to be carried out by railway enthusiasts. To this day, the museum railway operation in all its variants has always found a home on the HzL, especially in the years 1977 to 1985, when there was a strict ban on steam locomotives on the then Deutsche Bundesbahn.
The railway educational trail Neufra - Gammertingen shows multifaceted historical aspects of the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn and the region from construction to today. There are 15 information boards along the route, and the path can be approached from both sides. It runs alongside the incline route of 1:40, which used to demand everything from the steam locomotives, starts at the Neufra cemetery and goes to the Fehla chapel at the apex of the route.
