The half-timbered hall church was built in 1614 and forms the historical core of Wilhelmsburg. The thatched, half-timbered sexton's house was built in 1660 and is considered the oldest house in Wilhelmsburg; it marks the former center of the Elbe island.

The Kreuzkirche Kirchdorf in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg was founded as an offshoot of the Ochsenwerder parish and consecrated in 1388. This makes it the oldest church on the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg; until 1895, it was also the only church there. Its current form and furnishings date largely from the 17th century, more precisely from the years 1614 to 1617, when the dilapidated church was rebuilt.

In 1893/94, the Kreuzkirche was rebuilt, and its cruciform floor plan was created.

During World War II, the church suffered bomb damage, which was repaired in 1955.

Duke Georg Wilhelm von Brunswick-Lüneburg acquired the Elbe island and his daughter became the "Imperial Countess of Wilhehlmsburg". The Sophie-Dorothea-Stieg opposite the church is reminiscent of her. However, nothing remains of the old church. It was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century and the new one was inaugurated in 1617. The baptismal font and the "Princely Loge" date back to this time. A major renovation in 1894 gave the church its current cross-shaped floor plan.
