Oberstenfeld is a municipality in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg, 40 km north of Stuttgart. It belongs to the Stuttgart region and to the outskirts of the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart.

Oberstenfeld is located in the upper Bottwartal in the north-east of the district of Ludwigsburg and has a share in the natural areas of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains and the Neckar Basin. In the north and east it borders on the Löwenstein mountains, to the west the vineyard-covered hills of Forstberg and Wunnenstein rise up. The district of Prevorst is located on the forest heights of the Löwenstein mountains in a community exclave, surrounded by the areas of four communities in the Heilbronn district and the Rems-Murr district. At 517.5 m above sea level. NHN is measured at the district boundary north of Prevorst, the highest elevation of the entire municipal area as well as the district of Ludwigsburg.

The nearest neighboring communities are Beilstein in the north and Großbottwar in the south.

Oberstenfeld consists of the three districts (residential districts) Gronau (residential district II), Prevorst (residential district III) and Oberstenfeld (residential district I). The official naming of the districts is preceded by the name of the municipality and connected with a hyphen followed by the names of the districts. The three districts form residential districts within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code and the two districts of Gronau and Prevorst together form a village within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code with its own local council and mayor as its chairman. For the election of the local council, the spurious partial local election is used accordingly, Gronau and Prevorst form the two residential districts Residential District II and Residential District III. The districts of Gronau and Prevorst formed the independent municipality of Gronau until December 31, 1971. The village of Gronau belongs to the district of Gronau. The hamlet of Prevorst belongs to the district of Prevorst. The district of Oberstenfeld includes the village of Oberstenfeld, the castle and farmstead of Lichtenberg and the residential area of Neuwirtshaus, as well as the detached villages of Glashausen, Kratzheim, Schmaleneck and Zum Hag.[4][5]

Gronau is immediately north-east of Oberstenfeld, Prevorst is about five kilometers north-east of Oberstenfeld in the Löwenstein mountains. Prevorst is separated from the rest of the municipal area and forms an exclave between the district of Heilbronn and the Rems-Murr district. At 483 meters above sea level, it is the highest town in the Ludwigsburg district.
